Tech RiderFor Soldier's Tale
Technical Rider for The Soldier’s Tale (Music by Igor Stravinsky)This list of technical requests is intended as a firm guideline. While many venues will have no trouble in meeting these requirements, we understand that others will. Please note that some requests are negotiable with at least three months advance notice to the Artistic Director and Company Manager. PERSONNEL Venue/Presenter should provide full box office and front of house staff, including ticket sales people, ushers, concessions (if applicable) and merchandise sales people, as well as security. Venue/Presenter should provide technical director to oversee production staff for the duration of The Soldier’s Tale residence in the facility, including sufficient crew to load-in and set-up stage operations per Production Schedule to be finalized by JODP Production Manager and Presenter. Minimum performance/rehearsal run crew shall be six (6) -- including one (1) sound engineer/projection operator, one (1) light console operator, one (1) flyman/rigger, one (1) follow-spot operator, and two (2) deckhands (one left and one right). It is understood that additions to the run crew due to local work rules shall be the sole responsibility of the Presenter. JODP will provide a Production Manager and/or Lighting Designer and when a qualified rigger is not available on site, an Aerial Rigger. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS General Performance area must be swept and damp-mopped immediately prior to all rehearsals and performances. It must be kept clear of debris such as nails, screws, staples, and tacks at all times. Backstage area must be swept immediately prior to all rehearsals and performances. Facility Minimum Stage Dimensions: Sufficient stage area and black velour soft goods (legs and borders) to fully mask a 40’ wide x 28’ deep dance area with four wing openings are required when musicians are present on stage. If this stage dimension is not available, Presenter is responsible for providing separate performing space for The Soldier’s Tale orchestra (ideally an orchestra pit to be no smaller than 16’ x 12’). The minimum stage height clearance is 25’. Minimum Dimensions: Height 25' (clearance) x Depth 28' x Width 40' (If performing onstage, musicians will need a 15’ x 10’ area.) Wings and backstage area must be clear of debris and equipment at all times. Clear room needed beyond upstage goods for the rear projection is 19', and a crossover space beyond that 19’ is required. Also, two (2) concealed areas (stage left and stage right) must be large enough for one person to do quick changes during performance run. Dance floor surface must be marley or other similar floor surface, double-taped and level without bumps. Full screen projection capability on cyclorama is required. (Presenter must supply a white cyclorama to serve as lightable rear projection surface. The minimum projection surface for video from The Soldier's Tale is Width 30” x Height 20”.) Projection may be from the front or the back of the house. One (1) well-lit dressing room equipped with chairs, tables, electrical outlets, locking door, access to restrooms and a source of water should provide space for five (5) performers. Green Room area appropriate for seven (7) musicians and one (1) conductor before, during, and after all rehearsals, tech periods, and performances must be provided. Facility shall have sufficient fly space, counterweight system, or similar rigging to accommodate and fully mask JODP flying rig and (company-provided) flying scenic elements. **One point aerial rigging capability for performer to rise up and down at least 18 feet for rise up and down. **Fly space for a large light bulb (“interrogation light’), hanging mirror, clothes hanger with jacket **Storage space backstage for the following set pieces: chaise lounge, neon bar, and airport chair. Miscellaneous Equipment One (1) projector with HD resolution (1920 x 1080 is the ideal resolution.) and Mac Book Pro compatibility as well as appropriate lens for focal length of venues at a minimum of 15,000 ANSA lumens must be provided. **Mac Book Pro will run visuals for The Soldier's Tale with Q Lab Software (available for review at http://figure53.com/qlab/). Adequate control cabling must be provided to connect the projector to the laptop (most especially when laptop is at the FOH sound position). JODP provides Mac Book Pro Projector operator (provide by Theater needs to be fluent in Q lab. Operator must be familiar with the projector’s controls; presenter is responsible for any personel running projector, and for any additional power for the projector if the house power is not sufficient. As backup, we recommend two projectors, one as backup. Seven (7) chairs and ten (10) music stands for chamber musicians must be provided. **Any other equipment required by musicians seeking to meet technical needs is available upon request. (Examples of musicians' needs in the past include need for music stand lights and carpet(s) for percussion instruments.) Sound One (1) boom box capable of playing burned CDs or one (1) stereo with iPod-playing capability is required for all company rehearsal periods. One (1) wireless lavaliere microphone is required for one (1) company performer. Two – three (2-3) mics to possibly amplify the orchestra, if necessary. One (1) mixing board with inputs from all mics and outputs to all speakers is required. Two (2) onstage monitor speakers are required. (Sound system capable of filling performance facility with clean, undistorted sound is preferable.) Lights BOOMS Four (4) booms stage left and stage right, totaling eight (8) Thirty two (32) Source Four units for sidelight on each boom will be designated as shins, mids, heads, and cross lights according to positions. (Scrollers in this position can be substituted. Please discuss exact needs with LD.) OVERHEAD Thirty-two (32) Source Four units for a two (2) color high side wash system Three (3) separate systems of back light are required. Each will be a different color. One (1) full stage template wash is required (6 - 8 Source Four units will accompany the wash depending on stage size.) Three (3) color cyc lighting, prefer RGB Eighteen (18) Source Four units must be focused as specials. OVER HOUSE Two (2) separate systems of full stage coverage front light are required. Two (2) separate front diagonal wash systems are required. Four (4) Source Fours are required as specials. MISCELLANEOUS One (1) follow-spot is required. One (1) 6” Fresnel is required downstage of the apron. The appropriate number of circuits for orchestra stand lights with a minimum of one stand light per music stand is required. PRACTICALS (JODP provides) “Interrogation light” to be flown in. Needs dimmable circuit from Presenter. “Backstage Mirror” with lamps to be flown in. Needs dimmable circuit from Presenter. (see attached) Circuit for “Neon Bar” set piece. Dimmer set to non-dim. (see attached) SCHEDULE The Soldier’s Tale requires a minimum of two 8-hour load-in days and an additional dress rehearsal prior to the first performance. The production schedule shall be finalized between the JODP Production Manager and Presenter’s Technical Director one month prior to the company's arrival. Day 1 (Load-In, Aerial Rigging, and Spacing Rehearsal, 9 hour minimum) - Set up projection surface - Lay marly - Test rigging with dancer - Hang, circuit, and patch lighting units - Focus lighting units - Install and focus projector - Set up musician’s area (i.e. setting out/up music stands, music stand lights, and chairs) - Two (2) hour spacing rehearsal for dancers is required. At this time, nothing else can occur on stage. Day 2 (Cue-to-Cue & Stumble Through, 6 - 8 hours allowed) - Write lighting cues (Projector must be run at this point in order to accurately cue piece.) - Stumble through with musicians, dancers, and full tech crew - Notes Day 3 (Dress Rehearsal & First Show) - Two (2) hour dress rehearsal for performers and musicians is required. - Notes - One (1) hour warm-up class prior to first performance - First performance *Each subsequent performance should be preceded by a two and half hour period structured as follows below* Hour 1 – Dressing rooms, stage, and rehearsal area are open to stage manager, choreographer, and dancers for warm-up class. Hour 2 – Stage closed to dancers and choreographer as crew does notes and pre-show checks. Half-Hour – Stage open to dancers until either house opens or curtain rises depending on venue conditions.
