Street Greet

Street Greet begins as an interview with pedestrians and becomes a surprise encounter. Free means exchange. A conversation is a free exchange of ideas. Ideas are in people’s head. Ideas are out there in the world.  Neurons that fire together wire together. How do people make sense of the world? I’m curious if people think they’re free, if they fashion themselves free thinkers, and how thought is currency. What is free has value.

"So You Think Your Brain Can Dance"
co-taught with Dr. Wendy Suzuki
World Science Festival
Sunday June 1st, 2014

People used to believe that the right half of the brain produced creativity and art, while the left brain dominated all things mathematical and logical. The reality’s more complex, as you’ll learn when you join NYU neuroscientist Wendy Suzuki for an interactive class on how the brain is affected by movement. You’ll dissect your own brain, so to speak, learning what our neurons are really doing when we move and dance. And you’ll gain new insights into how different parts of the brain interact and work together while choreographing dances. Bring an open mind…and both halves of your brain.

4Chambers  a performance installation, immersive theater; a sensorial journey into the heart.

July 5, 12 noon and 1:30

Saturday / Sunday  July 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th, 20th, and 21st

Show Times: 11:30 AM, 1 PM, 2:30 PM, 4 PM, 5:30 PM

12 audience members per show

is an experiential performance installation. Referencing the human heart, our objective is to create an intimate spatial environment through which the audience threads. The idea is to allow the audience to monitor their hearts throughout. The barrier between the audience and the performers--usually taken for granted in proscenium pieces--is removed entirely in this immersive theater production. The audience becomes part of the piece. Guided by six cast members,  12 audience members traffic through the installation, mimicking the flow of the circulatory system.

Corridors function as arteries and veins, leading to discrete chambers, each with its own focus: (1) The visual chamber gets pulses stirring.  (2)  In the physical chamber dancers move with audience members in an intimate exchange, (3)  In the synapse chamber a series of questions connect feeling and thinking  (4) In the pulsing chamber,  as  endorphins are driven to the maximum, an interactive dance leads hearts to beat as one. The piece also features a gallery style ‘artery of knowledge’, featuring short films and displays about the heart: covering pulse points, the flow of blood through the  four chambers,  and a poignant testimonial  from a heart attack victim. The audience will  feel they are on the inside of a giant heart, and that their body is also a container of their own heart, with its attributes both scientific and emotional.

4Chambers is created in collaboration with choreographer/director Jody Oberfelder, video artists Jason Bahling and Jake Witlen; lighting by Kathy Kaufmann, music by Andy Akiho, Richard Einhorn, Matt McBane, Jonathan Melville Pratt, set by Juergen Riehm, photography by wowe, and dramaturgy by Pele Bauch. Kryssy Wright is stage manager; Simon Cleveland is technical facilitator. Performers  include Michele Jongeneel, Mary Madsen, Zachary Denison, Jake Szczypek, Joey Kipp, Mercedes Searer. Aditional performers on film include Edward Einhorn, Ishmael Houston Jones, Dr. Wendy Suzuki, Dr. Andre Fenton, Kathryn Merry, Sarah Parton, Lonnie Poupard, ChristinaNoel Reaves, and Jessica Weiss.

As the audience threads through the installation, they experience their hearts from the inside out.

Abrons Arts Center

JODY OBERFELDER DANCE PROJECTS presents three new works March 1-3 at Abrons Arts Center on the Lower East Side. THROB is a conceptual and physically demanding work inspired by the biological workings of the heart. Informed by conversations with cardiologist Dr. Holly Andersen, Oberfelder cultivates the heart for metaphorical meanings, associations, and physiological information. During the performance, heart monitors help access the intimate physicality of the dancers by measuring the heart fluctuations produced by physical exertions and emotional confluence. A sound designer, Weston Minissali, plugs the dancers actual heart rates, at specific moments in the performance, into a synthesizer, which compliments an original soundtrack by composer Andy Akiho.

Also on the program is RE: DRESS, a solo performed by Jody Oberfelder, set to music by Clogs, and the premiere of SUNG HEROES, a quartet which places each dancer in a cinematic lens, working through his or her own -- and others' -- emotional narratives to connect to the superhero within. Music is by The Section Quartet. Collaborators for the evening include lighting designer Kathy Kaufmann, costumes by Katrin Schnabl and dancers Lonnie Poupard, ChristinaNoel Reaves, Jake Szczypek and Jessica Weiss.

NY Season
Joyce SoHo
Premiere of Approaching Climax
Moved (2003)

Approaching Climax, choreographed by Jody Oberfelder, teases the extraordinary out of ordinary encounters. By exploring the emotional intricacies of mundane, physical engagements, Oberfelder questions the nature of narrative and the mysteries of social arousal. Text by Jody Oberfelder. Moved (2003) choreographed to music by Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields, mines the emotion of love, with all its flip-sided facets. Everyone has loved. Everyone has moved and been moved. Said Deborah Jowitt in the Village Voice (Feb. 22, 2003) about this piece: "Jody Oberfelder knows her stuff. She sets her precise, muscular, strongly designed athletic movements in excellent built structures that keeps your eyes and mind engaged, and she provides surprises without rambling or digressing." Dancers include Aditi Dhruv, Jill Frere, Rebekah Morin, Jody Oberfelder, Jake Szczypek, and Ed Rice. Collaborators include Katrin Schnabl and Liz Prince (costumes), Will Arnold (Visual Design), and Kathy Kaufmann (lighting). This work is supported by The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, a NYFA Build Grant, and the Harkness Foundation for Dance in addition to individual donors

The warm-up strives to make the floor user-friendly including variations on yoga, releasing, gymnastics and Pilates. Improvisation is inserted as dancers resource their own unique energetic coils. Inverted movement will be emphasized: head, hand and forearm stands teach the upper body and arms the same skills needed for legs and feet right side up. Learning this control leads to abandon and gives one freedom to negotiate being upside-down without fear. This will lead to off-center full-tilted dancing. Dancers will find their way through phrases from the company's repertory that ease from upright into inverted moving.
